North Miami Jaycees
(Meets every Thursday, 8:00 pm, North Miami Jaycee Hall, 12100 West Dixie Hwy.)
The North Miami Jaycees is an organization made up of young men and women who want to make a difference in their community while having a good time.

Recent charitable projects organized by the Jaycees include our annual Haunted House, the Winternational Festival, and a Classic Car Show.  Additionally, through our non-profit charity branch, we have sponsored Little League baseball teams in North Miami and have donated to charities like the Boy/Girl Scouts and the American Cancer Society.

The Jaycees allows its members to learn valuable leadership skills as well.  Though everyone has a lot of fun organizing our events, they take a great deal of preparation and organization.  I learned much of what I know today from the Jaycees.

Here's a note from their president, Alice Billman:
I am Alice Billman, a North Miami resident and president of the grassroots
non-profit organization, Heroes Unite Inc.  My passion for arts, culture and
education can only compare to my enthusiasm for the enrichment of youth. If
we don't address the lack of integrity, literacy and social consciousness of
our youth now, what hope do we have for our collective future? For the past
five years I have conducted a unique after school program fusing art and
academic enrichment with astounding results. There is an undeniable need for
quality enrichment services between the hours of 3:00 - 6:00 pm not just in
North Miami but Dade County in general. As a parent of a Dade County public
school student, this need is more than just a statistic for me. Our small
class size, nurturing environment and exposure to arts provides the type of
supplemental educational that renders a student more successful in conduct,
effort and academic grade.  Arts foster the powers of concentration,
observation and cooperation.  They are non-competitive and have been
documented to improve literacy, self-esteem, critical thinking and
perseverance.  Unfortunately, when budget cuts for education occur, the
first thing to disappear are the arts program. Due to the demand (waiting
lists are filled a year in advance) for quality programming which Heroes
Unite provides, I'm expanding the S.S.A.S. (Shaolin Studies After School
Enrichment Program) program to include fine art, dance, drama and music for
the 2004 - 2005 school year.  This will be a collaboration of several
non-profits in the North Miami area. I am underway writing grants to secure
funding which is an ongoing obstacle.  Currently, families pay $2.50 per
hour for this exceptional daily service. This includes transportation from
the school to the activity site, 1 hour of academic tutoring and 1 hour of
an arts curriculum. None of our administrators, tutors or teachers receive
monetary remuneration for their services.  Naturally, I would like that to
change by acquiring grants that go beyond covering operating costs. By
expanding this program, more transportation needs to be secured as well as
additional tutor training programs and administrative action. The most
important factor to secure success is a powerful and influential board of
directors.  This is the ultimate task currently facing Heroes.  We can
enhance our youth only to the extent that a dedicated board of directors
offer their expertise in the areas of law, education, finance, culture,
marketing, politics and social advocacy. Our long range goal is to acquire
an independent facility (ideally to purchase a building) to be able to offer

all these services under one roof. This brief outline is to acquaint you
with our goals and implore you to lend your support, ideas, suggestions or
funds to this very worthy cause which directly serves our North Miami
elementary age school children.  Please refer to our website at
www.heroesunite.org for measurable outcomes, history, etc., regarding our
worthy non-profit.  Feel free to contact me directly at
 alice@kungfuconnection.com.
