The North Miami city council and Miami-Dade County School Board have agreed to a plan to build new schools in North Miami. It is unprecedented in its scope and will bring to North Miami three brand-new schools...all to be built concurrently. The city will lease to the School Board different parcels of land for $1 per year for 40 years. The School Board will fund the design and construction of all 3 facilities.

* A new North Miami High School will house 3,200 students and cost $93 million to build. It will open in August 2009. It will sit on land currently occupied by North Miami Middle School, the Armory, Valentine Center, Gribble Pool, and old fire station.

* North Miami Middle School will become "North Miami Ele-Middle," with students from grades K-8 studying within its walls. There will be room for 1,220 elementary students and 800 middle-schoolers. It will cost $37 million and be ready to open in August 2008. It will sit where the current PE fields for North Miami High are now.

* Janet Reno High School, located near Biscayne Landing, will open in August 2009. It will cost $43 million and be home to 1,560 students. Its site is currently vacant, located just east of the North Miami Athletic Stadium.

In addition, Cagni Park will be revamped, with new ball fields, tracks, and other amenities. Watch out, Dade County! North Miami is going to be home to the BEST schools anywhere!

Pioneer Pride Fund

Goals & Purpose - After winning reelection in 2003, North Miami City Councilman Scott Galvin decided he wanted to give something back to his alma mater, North Miami Senior High. A member of the Class of 1986, Galvin was the Student Government president during his senior year and had his mentor, teacher David Hudak, administer to him the oath of office when he was first elected in 1999.

With funds leftover from his 2003 campaign account, Galvin created the Pioneer Pride Fund (PPF), a charitable account to benefit educational, extracurricular, and athletic programs at the school. The PPF is a subsidiary of the North Miami Jaycee Charities' Inc., an existing 501c3 charitable foundation.

"I have so many wonderful memories of North Miami High, " said Galvin. "I want to help current students so they can have the same experiences I did."

Galvin made an initial donation of $5,000 to the school, specifically to help defray the costs of new football uniforms. He then shored up the PPF with an additional $5,000 to be used toward future projects agreed upon with the school's administration.

Having just past its 50th anniversary, North Miami Senior High School has thousands of successful graduates working in a wide variety of fields. Galvin plans for the PPF to serve as an on-going fundraising arm, allowing school alumni and the surrounding community to give back to the school that has given so much to them.

Anyone wishing to make a donation can mail checks payable to the "Pioneer Pride Fund" at 12100 West Dixie Highway, North Miami, FL 33161. For more information, call 305-940-0302 or email PioneerPride@aol.com.

Our Conestoga Yearbook Collection
Thanks to some generous Pioneers, the Greater North Miami Historical Society (www.northmiamihistory.com) has a growing collection of North Miami High "Conestoga" yearbooks. Sadly, the school stopped producing a yearbook about 5 years ago. Then, the school's collection of past Conestogas was lost in a flood. This collection might now be the most expansive in existence.
Thanks to Dee Basnett, widow of former teacher Fred Basnett, and Mim North Miranda, Class of 1960, for their donations.
Here are the books we have:
1958, 1960, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993.
In addition, Scott Galvin, class of 1986, has his own personal books from 1984, 1985, and 1986
